Neue Wege in der EU Handels- und Investitionspolitik

Politik im Interesse großer Konzerne – die Handschrift von Unternehmensverbänden prägt die Agenda der europäischen Handels- und Investitionspolitik:

Neue Freihandelsabkommen sollen abgeschlossen, Verhandlungen über umfassende Investitionsbestimmungen aufgenommen und für die Durchsetzung europäischer Wirtschaftsinteressen gesorgt werden. Doch immer mehr Menschen widersetzen sich dieser Politik. Sie fordern eine Kehrtwende in der Handels- und Investitionspolitik und die Regulierung der Wirtschaft im Interesse von Entwicklung, Umwelt und sozialer Gerechtigkeit. Alternativen sind mehr als bloße Utopie, sondern tatsächlich realisierbar: Durch Bündnisse zwischen Herstellern und Konsument/innen werden ökologische, umweltfreundliche und sozial verantwortlich hergestellte Produkte gerecht gehandelt; öffentliche Verwaltungen beziehen fair produzierte und nachhaltige Waren und Dienstleistungen; verantwortlich handelnde Unternehmen setzen nicht auf ein immer schnelleres Wachstum und Expansion in neue Märkte, sondern richten ihre Produktion am Gemeinwohl aus. Auf der Konferenz wollen wir gemeinsam andere Wege in der Handelspolitik suchen: Wie können Paradigmenwechsel aussehen, welche konkreten Projekte und Kampagnen gibt es, um Gegenentwürfe zu stärken und durchzusetzen? Darüber hinaus ist die Konferenz ein Meilenstein auf dem Weg “Hin zu einem alternativen Handelsmandat für die EU”, das die Handels- und Investitionspolitik auf ein demokratisches Fundament setzen soll.

Short Conference description in English

More than 20 German and Austrian NGOs joined hands in organising the conference “Kooperation statt Konkurrenz – Neue Wege in der EU Handels- und Investitionspolitik” (Cooperation, not competition – new ways for the EU trade and investment policy). It will take place from the 25th to the 27th of November 2011 in Stuttgart in southern Germany. We expect around 100 participants, mainly activist and interested citizens.

The core aim of the conference is to broaden the debate around alternative trade policy proposals and to present and discuss examples of campaigns and activities that contribute to concrete policy changes. The conference aims also to take up and promote the campaign “Towards an Alternative Trade Mandate for the EU” (for more details see http://www.s2bnetwork.org/themes/towards-an-alternative-trade-mandate-for-the-eu.html).

The conference will start on Friday evening with a panel on concrete proposals for an alternative trade policy. It will then continue on Saturday with an key note on the current paradigm behind the EU trade and investment policy, followed by two sessions of workshops on various issues, including agriculture, IP, raw materials, Investment policy, cooperates etc. The working sessions will be followed in the late afternoon by a stocktaking discussion “10 Years after Doha, 12 Years after Seattle, where does the civil society movement on trade stand today?” The aim of this panel would be to talk about the past decade of civil society mobilization on trade issues, why it was and is so difficult to move the debate from defensive struggles to real alternatives, and what lessons we can learn from the past. On Sunday, a third round of workshops will take place, followed by the final discussion on “Europe in Crisis: Why is it so important now to aim for cooperation, not competition?

The conference will be in German, but a professional simultaneous translation will be available for all panels and for some workshops.
